Wanna see my Canon?

WWW
« on: June 30, 2009, 03:58:16 PM »

Well, at work I have no photo processing software so I've loaded GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) portable onto my flash drive...

www.portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable

... & I have to say I'm very impressed. It's free GNU software & does everything the photographer needs to manipulate an image to a very high quality (& has a few useful tools that I might play with that the others don't have)... if I get a chance I'll post some before & afters here but at the moment I'm only using it as a backup if I need to process something up when I'm not at my own PC... if you're in the market for something for photo processing give it a look. You can download & test all the others (PhotoShop, PaintShop Pro) FoC for 30-day trials so make your own mind up... I'm seriously considering switching this to be my main manipulation package.

For the faint-hearted there is a modified version of the GIMP called GIMPshop.  I think Paint.NET is also pretty good!

Ah... interesting... I'd not spotted that... GIMPshop is made to look like PhotoShop... I actually don't like the way that some things work on PhotoShop (I use PaintShop Pro at home) so I won't be switching over unless it offers additional features not found in the original GIMP (which is unlikely unless it gets phased out through the popularity of GIMPshop) but it must be a right headache for Adobe Grin

/edit... Ah... beware... it's based on an older version of GIMP which might carry bugs or less features than the latest.

Well either my version of GIMP is very old, or corrupt.. just downloaded the portable app to stick on my USB stick and its so different! I might even use this one properly instead of using it for modifying screen-dumps Smiley

Mark, which version are you now using?

I ask because I want to know whether it can produce the effects I am looking for in this post

Thanks Smiley

I use the gimp portable on my memory stick (or 40Gb hard drive) at work too even though I have an older version of photoshop installed. a couple of us have hacked the internet explorer settings to be able to use firefox portable on the work proxy servers (still subject to the internet filters but way faster)
