Just as the thread title says Smiley

My camera doesnt geotagging capabilities Sad  and I'm wondering what options there are to enable my photos to have geotag data, and how difficult it is to do. What extra equipment would I need to carry with me, and what extra software would I need to use?
Its not so much an issue at the moment, but as I have found whilst scanning my old photos, over time it does become very difficult to remember where/when the photo was taken.

Many thanks in advance

I Tracey,

I was looking for something else, and saw this thread.  I use Google Picasa as a photo viewer, and it has the option to geotag photos.  I have done it a couple of time, but I don't geotag every photo.

I have an ipaq with a gps unit added, so could get my co-ordinates if I wished, but then I would have to physically add the data to the pictures, I know some cameras can communicate with a GPS unit to get the data - this would be great for site work, taking photos and positioning them after, but for a lot of my shots, mostly pointless, as they are indoors, great for landscapes and architectural photos though.

Thanks Willie, my issue is mainly when I'm taking photos. When I went to New York, I took hundreds of photos... now I'm struggling to find the  locations of some of the photos... having some form of connected method of geotagging would've helped. (and would definately help in the future too)

I think this is similar to what I would need. I've heard there are tiny gps units available that can somehow link to the camera. As many of my shots are outdoor shots, this sort of setup would be very useful

I guess its a case of googleing camera with gps, or camera gps unit, I can recall seeing one that had a bluetooth gps that could be placed on the target, thinking it would be great for site work.

Hey, thanks Willie, that looks quite promising. I intend to start travelling more, so something like that looks like it could work. I just need to find out whether it will work on Olympus RAW files (as I have heard that some GPS loggers wont Sad )

We just purchased a RICOH camera wit a builr in GPS unit. You can tag lat/long to the photo. It also came with some software that allows us to add notes to the photo. (We are setting government survey corners and have to tag the Lat/Long and the add notes concerning the location of the monument.)
Unless you are doing something similar to our project I cannot see the "neccessity" of doing this. The additional gost of this option would be difficult to justify for family photos. Unless you just have more money than you know what to do with, (If that is the case, email me and I can give you some jim dandy ideas!!)

I wish I did have more money than sense... oh wait, I have very little sense Wink

I know the add-on geotagging is getting cheaper to buy, and as my family get older its my intention to travel more, so it would be great (but not a neccessity) to have any photos taken on a tour, with their locations identified, so you dont forget where you were when you took it. I certainly dont intend buying a new camera body/system just so I can have my photos geotagged Smiley (not till I win the lottery anyway)
