I currently use my WD External drive like a normal hard disk, and its fast filling up with all my photos etc.

Any recommendations for a new external drive? I would prefer a reasonably portable one if preferable, but its not essential.

We dont have Vista in the house, so it doesnt need to be vista compatible, but we do have XP, Ubuntu and a Mac, so it would be preferable to have one that would work with all those, but working with XP is a must Smiley

Any suggestions?

Well, all you need to support OSuX, Ubuntu and XP is just to format the drive as FAT32, which can be read/written to with all of those OSes.

Other than that, I don't know Smiley

It's hard to pay over £100 for an external hard drive these days... up to 500gb they're almost all powered off the usb (but double check just in case) & probably use similar components... & 'cos it's just a back-up out-n-out speed isn't an essential... have a look around & if you find a cheap one check the reviews... oh... & I'm in the market for one in the next few weeks (my ageing 250gb Lacie is groaning under the strain of endless backups off a small laptop) Smiley

For a 500GB external, if you pay over £70 you're being ripped off.  I mean... hell, This is a 1TB for < £70 inc VAT

Worth noting that both of these have external power supplies... I think anything above 500gb does at the moment.

Well, while we were in the USA, I was surprised how much most of the electronic and camera stuff was! Its currently cheaper to buy hard drives and stuff here (compared with New York stores we looked in anyway) So needless to say I didnt buy any photo-gear while we were there, nor did I buy a new external drive.

Aye... I thought that might be the case... it's difficult to beat internet prices at the moment.
