That looks a nice rugged bit of kit. Is it something you will take travelling, or will it be a purely "home storage" bit of kit for you?

Essentially it's just a back-up drive, so it's rugged nature isn't of premium importance, but it is a well made piece of kit... rubberised case... very nice Smiley

I only use my 1Tb external hard drive at home, so I got a WD externally powered one, I use free software Toucan to copy my photos from my hard drive to the WD external drive - my hard drive only has this years pictures on it, everything is on the WD, but I also have a 160Gb usb powered external hard drive that I back up the photos on the WD to- triple redundancy.
I have just about given up with usb jump drives, I have about 10 now, and they are always full (even the 8Gb ones) some I run portable apps from when I am at work, but recently I have taken to using an old 40Gb laptop harddrive on a bare bones connector ( so the hard drive is really just plug and play) and have other spare laptop hard drives for extra storage just in case. Portable apps is great as it doesnt show up on your hard drive, I have the gimp as a portable app and open office, so I can manipulate images on any pc I land up using, and then embed them into a word document and save it as a pdf.
(oops I am starting to sound like a techno- geek  Sad  bigeyes )

Ha... sounds very much like my set-up... I've got a spare 80gb laptop drive with a usb conn just sat on it for big stuff (had a case but I lost the screws & now don't bother) but I still mostly use a couple of 8gb flash drives for portable apps at w*rk (including gimp) & everyday use. I went for a USB powered 500gb drive 'cos my house is coming down with psu's & the area around my socket gangs is resembling several rats' nets.
